If you know your history, you'll know that watches don't start with wearing them beautifully on your wrists. Gentlemen wore watches today known as pocket watches, which held the timekeeper at the end of Albert's long chain and held him tightly in his coat pocket. Anything small enough to be worn on the wrist is considered imprecise and more likely to be damaged.

Women, on the other hand, wear timepieces on their wrists, with the virtues of convenience and status, as well as delicate ornaments that are carefully kept by elaborate chains and bracelets. The tradition can even be traced back to the 19th century, when women only began to appreciate clocks, even though they thought it was impolite to check time in social or business occasions. Secret watches (clocks cleverly integrated into jewelry) allow women to remain as they are without frowning.

When Brazilian pilot Alberto Santos Dumont, in collaboration with his close friend Cartier, founded Santos de Cartier in 1904 to make it easier to read while flying, this gender bias caused a huge change. The watch will continue to serve in battle trench, diving to unprecedented depths in the ocean and soaring to new heights in the cockpit. Just as they need different functions and case materials, these watches need different straps to perform their duties best.
